Liquor selling time extended till 11pm from October 1 in Telangana

The new policy on Telangana government consumption, which will come into force on October 1, is set to extend the working hours of the bars and liquor stores in an hour at night.

A draft policy on consumption has been presented to the Prime Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Friday. Mr. Rao called a meeting with officials of the Secretariat on Friday to finalize the policy. However, no decision was taken on the extension of working hours in Friday's meeting. It was decided to meet and discuss before taking a final decision on the matter.

At present, the liquor stores are allowed to operate 11 am to 10 pm and bars from 11 am until 12 pm. But there are conditions for bars to serve liquor only until 11 pm and only serve food from 23:00 to 12 pm. The liquor store owners are demanding to extend the hours of two hours 10 am to 11 pm, while bar owners are demanding to enable them serve liquor until 12 pm instead of 23:00. Earlier, liquor stores used to be open until 23:00. But then the government of Kiran Kumar Reddy had reduced by two hours time setting from 11 am-10 pm.

However, there are public protests, especially women against extending the closing time in an hour for liquor stores until 23:00. Most liquor shops have become open bars with people who consume alcohol right in front of the shops and passers creating problems especially women and girls.
