TECHIES TO DITCH CARS AND GO GREEN IN HYDERABAD

Go Green 'is the new mantra of high-tech Hyderabad.
At least so it seems from the many initiatives that techies environmentfriendly city are rolling out recently. And the latest is his only 'days' car-free initiative in a week.

Launched earlier this month, the program saw several professionals ditch their private cars for the day and opt for buses and cycles to reach work. Many also found predictable carpool with friends and to reduce number of four-wheel vehicles heading in the IT belt.

But while the "green" movement had a marginal impact on pollution levels Cyberabad during those 24 hours, also it sparked a debate about the sustainability of these units.

"Nobody can keep pushing people week after week, to participate in this campaign. The people have to join voluntarily," said Sudha IT professional Basu, suggesting that sincere efforts are recognized participants in order to "keep them motivated to continue reducing carbon footprints". Basu's thoughts found support in the broadcast by Avinash Mohanty, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Cyberabad. "I do not think that our participation in such initiatives can work wonders. It is the choice of a person to go organic. At best, some incentives can be offered to keep motivated professionals," he said.

Although environmentalists as Captain J Rama Rao praised the efforts of the fraternity IT and even highlighted how "any reduction in pollution levels, however tiny, is significant," he agreed on the need to plan well targeted support a "mission" as vast as this. "To ensure that such an initiative will not fade halfway, the government has to get involved and extend these activities to other parts of the city smogchoked" he insisted.

Also a subject of debate among many is the fear of traffic congestion due to an increase in the number of buses in NOCAR days. While the 1st of the new initiative saw 62 additional shuttle buses for state road plying on routes between Pragathi Nagar and WaveRock Inorbit Mall, Nizampet and WaverockInorbit mall and Lingampally and Mehdipatnam, techies are concerned that the presence of such an expansive fleet could cause jams in the future.

"Sixty-two is a great number. And while I praise the initiative, I feel that these buses that take up more space than cars and two wheelers could eventually backfire," said Divya Tatikonda techie.

Even the State Council Telangana Pollution Control (TSPCB) distrusted the success of such initiatives. "We have to analyze the data to a month before we can determine whether the initiative was a success or a not.One day will not make any significant changes. Initiatives like these have to follow the same impulse," said N Raveendhar a senior environmental scientist associated with TSPCB.

However, the IT sector is all pumped and refuses to give up their efforts. "We will keep the heat in the campaign. We will continue building on the momentum that we aim to keep at least 10,000 cars off the road for Hi-Tec City for a day each week.we are giving the project six to eight weeks be fully effective, "said Ramesh Loganathan HYSEA president.
