New hard drives to boost laptops

Computers, from laptops to supercomputers, could receive a further boost speed next year thanks to a new type of hard drive developed by Intel. Intel Optane leads, as they are called, are based on a new way to store digital data that can operate up to 1,000 times faster than flash memory technology inside of the hard drives, memory cards and mobile devices today.

The first units of Optane not be much faster than storing data today. A prototype shown by Intel at its annual developer conference in San Francisco on Tuesday was only about seven times faster than available higher range today, the flash drive. However, even this level of performance could have significant effects on the capabilities of computers of consumers and businesses, and Optane units may work better for the time they reach the market in 2016.

Removing bottlenecks - Slow speed data storage compared to the rate at which the processor can work on data has become a major bottleneck in the capabilities of computers. Several large computer companies and chip have invested heavily in new technology promising data storage, but none has been successful. Intel Optane units are based on a technology called 3D Xpoint, developed in collaboration with the company Micron memory chip.

Intel says the technology is affordable enough that Optane units will be available next year for uses ranging from large data centers, lightweight laptops companies. Rob Crooke, a general manager in the project memory of Intel, predicted that improve play, supercomputers and data analysis. "We hope to see progress in personalized medicine, in business analysis to allow companies, cities and countries may be run more efficiently," he said.
