Pregnancy can boost women's memory: Study

Contrary to popular perception, pregnancy actually makes women smarter rather forgetful, a recent study shows. The researchers found that pregnant women can do just as well on memory tests than other women - and in many cases actually outperformed the other.



The research team from the University of Western Ontario had 54 women undergo a series of mental tests. The participants were of similar age and background, but half of them were pregnant, and half had no children. Excluding pregnant women who show signs of depression, they are mothers performed better than their peers without children on tests of working memory.

Researcher Elizabeth Hampson explains that when a woman is not depressed, the hormones of pregnancy can alter brain chemistry to improve memory, reports the Daily Mail.
