Coffee overdose harms body, NIN study finds

The next time you crave for your favorite cup of tea, think twice, according to experts from the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) observed that excessive intake of caffeine can hinder the absorption of nutrients in the body.

`Coffeeguzzlers number has grown manifold in the city, with the highest prevalence among employees working in the software business and sectors, due to their work odd hours, sleepless nights and tedious routine.

"Consumption of caffeine as a cup or two does not do much damage. But in this part of the country, consumption is high in various forms. The regular consumption induces a physiological dependence on caffeine," said D Raghunatha Rao, member and coordinator of the committee NIN dietary guidelines.

A study by food safety authori ties found that in India, the consumption of coffee has been marked in 13% of the entire population, which is concentrated in the southern states. A half-cup measuring about 250 ml of coffee contains 80 to 150 mg of caffeine compared to 60 mg of tea.

The trend, however, shows that the rate of caffeine dependence has risen. People tend to enjoy higher than 200 mg after which tends to produce negative effects, such as nervousness and anxiety dose. Another important issue to be pondered over is the presence of a chemical called tannin present in both tea and coffee, which is infamously known to interfere with iron absorption in bones.

"There are several reports showing that caffeine is a stimulant of the brain, but hinders the body's sleep cycle that makes it harmful," NIN former director Kamala Krishnaswamy told TOI.

"On average, people consume coffee to mark the beginning of your day. But what we must consider is the presence of Tanins an anti-nutrients substance. It is difficult for the body to absorb the nutrients we buy food. And the standard in the city is consuming a cup of coffee after a meal, especially breakfast. This does not allow nutrients from food to enter the body, "said Rao.
