Scientists map a world without humans

Researchers have provided the first estimate of how the mammalian diversity world map would look like if modern man never existed. Then most of northern Europe probably now home to not only wolves, moose and bears of Eurasia, but also animals such as elephants and rhinos, researchers said.

The researchers based their estimates on the distribution of species according to their ecology, biogeography and the current staff of the natural environment. "Northern Europe is far from the only place where humans have reduced the diversity of mammals," Jens-Christian Svenning, Department of Biosciences, University of Aarhus in Denmark said. The current world map of mammal diversity shows that Africa is the only place with a high diversity of large mammals.

However, the world map shows much greater distribution of the high diversity of large mammals in almost everyone, with particularly high levels in North and South America. "Most safaris in Africa today take place, but under natural circumstances, many or even larger animals would certainly have existed in other places, especially places like Texas and the northern region around ArgentinaSouthern Brazil," said lead author Soren Faurby
