HYD-TECH PUTS AEROSPACE, DEFENCE MFG IN NEW ORBIT

Not many would know that the cab of the S-92 helicopter ferries around US President Barack Obama, Made in Hyderabad 'as are some of the key components driving ISRO interplanetary craft to Mars, Mangalyaan.
When Andhra Pradesh lost the coveted Tata Nano project in 2008, which was a blessing in disguise for the state. Ratan Tata promised a dejected state government was going to park an equally prestigious AP project, boosting the aerospace and defense manufacturing sector into a new orbit Hyderabad industry.

He kept his promise, and that is how Tata Advanced Systems Ltd established its first aerospace SEZ in India Adibatla on the outskirts of Hyderabad city put in the defense and aerospace manufacturing world map through joint ventures with Lockheed Martin and US Sikorsky and RUAG Swiss player pumping investment of over Rs 4,000 crore. Today, the second wave of Hyderabad investment in this sector has become the greatest challenge to the supremacy of Bangalore in the aerospace and defense industry.

While Bangalore emerged as an aviation hub thanks to HAL (which also has a small presence in Hyderabad), Hyderabad has a stronger missile base, the foundation of which was laid after the 1962 Indo-China war. Premier institutes run by the government as Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) and Research Centre Imarat (RCI), among others, were established in the city, which is considered safe as it was well outside the range of the missiles from hostile neighbors.

"In recent years, manufacturing components for these SMEs defense institutions have begun building subsystems and systems for them. These institutions have also ensured a steady stream of talent to the industry, requiring highly skilled work" says G Satheesh Reddy, scientific advisor to the defense minister. He added that more than 70% of the components for the range of Akash missiles are also being from Hyderabad SMEs.

In fact, the strong base of Hyderabad over 1,000 SMEs, with IT companies that serve the aerospace segment, has proven to be a big draw for global aerospace giants. This is perhaps what caused Boeing to bet in Hyderabad in partnership with the Tatas.

"Strategic advantages of Hyderabad is its emerging industrial base, infra structure and availability of skilled labor. All these are fundamental to developing a competitive aerospace and defense basis and take this into consideration when signing a framework agreement to cooperate in TASL aerospace and defense manufacturing explore possible opportunities for development of integrated systems, including unmanned aerial vehicles, "Boeing president diameter Pratyush Kumar said.

In fact, Boeing is already working with Avantel based in Hyderabad in the mobile satellite systems for aircraft P-8I mili ary and Cyient Ltd. (Business nfotech) for many of their projects commercial aircraft.

This ecosystem is also fueling multi-billion dollar sector or maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) in the city. In May 2015, Air India established its MRO Rs 80 million rupees in the international airport of Hyderabad as well as 250 acres GMR Aerospace Park SEZ housing services GMR Aerospace Engineering Company Ltd narrow-body aircraft such as the Airbus A 320 and Boeing 737 , among others.

"Hyderabad is also important from the point of view of maintenance, as it has been a maintenance station on the basis of ancient Indian airlines from the early days. The labor requirements and higher level of tools, equipment, processes and systems required work to carry out controls higher level on the plane were already available. Hyderabad is being seen as a major service center for the workload captive to Air India as well as third-party business, "says HR Jagannath, CEO of Air India Engineering Services Limited (AIESL).

Pratt & Whitney now based in the United States is preparing to launch its third global hub after the US and China for the training of engineers and technicians from aircraft near the airport of Hyderabad.

To keep the sector cruising smoothly, the Telangana government is not only the creation of second propagation aerospace state park on 1,000 acres in Elimenidu on the outskirts of Hyderabad as the 500 acres Adibatla Aerospace and Precision Engineering Park is already saturated, but also is putting the finishing an aerospace policy to be announced in November touches, says IT secretary Jayesh Ranjan Telangana.
