100 elephants killed in two years across South India

Kunjumon has lived most of his adult life in the forests of Kerala, as a caretaker government and then as a cook for the transition poachers. That made little difference, he told police was the murder of a baby elephant last year which changed his life .In June this year, the 62-yearold entered a forest office and made his peace.
What emerged in the probe was a massive operation poaching ivory tusks () not only in Kerala, but neighboring Tamil Nadu and Karnataka too. The researchers found that in Kerala the gang had killed more than 20 elephants in 10 months, but TOI forestry officials said the figure in the southern region over the last two years could be as high as 100. And this would be the most serious periods of elephants in southern forest brigand Veerappan after he was shot in 2004.

Research conducted in the last two months point to a nexus of poachers and forest officers.Among the 40 people arrested so far is a forest officer rank and a rank of deputy officer. They poachers also they found holes in the forest Vazhachal and at least 17 crude weapons. "Officials checkpoints for poachers to cart away the ivory would be opened once the murders took place," said an official monitoring senior forest department.

The seizure came last Tuesday when an assault team Adimali in Idukki recovered more weapons, suggesting the racket had spread from the Munnar Malayatoor forests. In Tamil Nadu, officials found rampant poaching and tiger reserves Sathyamangalam Mudumalai and Bandipur in Karnataka. The mastermind, Aikaramatton Vasu, was found dead in a house in Dodamarg in Maharashtra. There was also a suicide note.

"We have recovered 50 kg of ivory, but are not sure if they all came from wild elephants," said an official surveillance Kerala.

"It's a little disconcerting because in the last 15 years, there was not much demand for ivory. The recent poaching incidents indicate demand has risen," said Raman Sukumar, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore
