27 killed in Bangkok temple blast so far.

More than 27 people, including four foreigners, were killed and 117 injured in a powerful explosion at a popular temple Lord Brahma in a busy area here on Monday in the first such attack in the Thai capital.

The blast, which the government believes was aimed at harming the economy and tourism, it occurred within Erawan Shrine dedicated to Lord Brahma in the downtown district of Chidlom. It panic as people fled the scene was set where cars and motorcycles exploded on impact. The temple is situated on a main street through the commercial center of Bangkok and is surrounded by three large shopping centers and large international hotel chains. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Bangkok visited by tourists from East Asia and local Buddhists.

National police chief Somyot Pumpanmuang put the death toll at 16, but placed on Thai television 27. More deaths were feared due to the large number of wounded. Of the four foreigners killed, two have been identified as Chinese and a Filipino.

An IED attached to a utility pole inside the Erawan shrine complex in the Ratchaprasong intersection detonated at 18:55. The Rajprasong intersection has been the center of political demonstrations in recent years. No group claimed responsibility for the attack. Suspicion centers on the hand of Muslim separatists in the south and political factions in Bangkok struggling for power.

The iron gates surrounding the golden shrine of Phra Phrom as Lord Brahma is known in Thai, right in front of the Hyatt, were destroyed. The bomb apparently was placed near the grill inside the sacred precinct. The sanctuary was not damaged. Defense Minister Prawit Wongsuwong said: "It was a TNT bomb ... those who do not target foreigners ed and damage tourism and the economy."
