AP shuts down for special status

Normal life was affected as several parts of Andhra Pradesh remained closed on Tuesday in support of the demand for special category status for the state. The bandh call was given by the left parties and backed by the YSR Congress and Congress.
While the closure was complete in Rayalaseema, he received mixed response in southern Andhra coast. The bandh was partial in the three districts of north coastal Andhra Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam. National roads carrying a deserted as APSRTC buses and vehicles were kept out off the road.

Even the owners of petrol bunks joined the agitation. All educational institutions around the state remained closed for the day, while the cinemas canceled concerts noon. The Bank's operations were affected in many places. Government offices also reported thin attendance.

Police tightened security in all key facilities and rounded dozens of protesters after they tried to storm the bus and the government to enforce FICEs bandh.The Left parties gave the bandh call a week ago, but received a boost with the YSRCP and Congress supporters after the immolation of a Congress worker in Tirupati on Saturday. The worker, Muni Koti, died a day later.

Students of all universities across the state participated in the bandh. There were moments of anxiety protesters clashed with police.

YSRCP president YS Jaganmohan Reddy, who was in Tirupati, alleged that the NDA government had taken a decision to deny the status of special category of Andhra Pradesh. CPI state secretary K Ramakrishna along with hundreds of party activists organized a dharna front Pandit Nehru bus station in Vijayawada. "Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu, who sought the extension of the special status of five to 10 years, when he was in opposition, is now singing a different tune," he claimed.

APCC president N Raghuveera Reddy, top congressional leaders Devineni Nehru, Malladi Vishnu, Kolanukonda Devineni Avinash Sivaji and expressed solidarity with the leaders of the CPI and took part in the dharna.

About 60 people were detained in preventive Visakhapatnam. However, the bandh had no impact on industrial activity in the city.

Andhra University and other major educational institutions also remained closed on Tuesday.
